Born in Barcelona in 1941, pioneer
of post-modernism and one of the most important figures in
Spanish design throughout the twentieth century. Multi-talented
artist who, apart from creating countless household objects
and furniture, also boasts considerable graphic work as well
as articles of jewellery and even scenographies.
He started off as an outstanding draughtsman at Art College,
Lonja, and even though his true calling was to be a painter
he ended up going to Architecture School from where he graduated
in 1965. One year after finishing his studies he founded the
Studio Per, along with Pep Bonet, Cristian Cirici and Lluís
Clotet. The Belvedere Georgina and the house at Pantelleria
marked the beginning of his international trajectory, both
for the radicalism of his ideas and the effectiveness of
his expression. In this same year he co-founded the B.D Ediciones
de Diseño company, one of the first serious ventures into
Spanish industrial design since the post-war period. His
renown as an architect has been growing steadily since then
(having exhibited at the Fukuoka exhibition along with names
such as Rem Koolhaas, Michael Graves or Steven Holl, among
others), work which he has done in collaboration with Carlos
Díaz since 1987 and as a designer, working on his own, since
1984.
Tusquets' iconoclastic personality, disciple of Salvador Dali,
often hides the exacting rigour that he applies to his industrial
design and architectural projects. Most notable among his main
work is the restoration of the Palau de la Música Catalana
(Barcelona, 1983-1989), creative work on Lluís Domènech i Montaner;
the house at Somosaguas (Madrid, 1987-1989); the Pavillion
Tusquets in the Parc de la Villette (Paris, 1987-1990) and
the housing and office block in the Olympic Village (Barcelona,
1988-1991). As a designer he is responsible for major pieces
such as the Varius (Casa, 1984) and Gaulino (Carlos Jané, 1986-1987)
chairs, the Catalono bench (with Lluìs Clotet, B.D. Ediciones
de Diseño, 1974), the Hypóstila shelving system (with con Lluìs
Clotet, B.D. Ediciones de Diseño, 1980) and the Oronda tea
set (Alessi, 1983).
Portico came into existence as a result of the work Tusquets
has done with Coinma, representing the company’s future commitment
towards design, aesthetics and functionality.
